Martie Viets
Senior User Experience Engineer
Microsoft Tellme

Martie has spent over 25 years designing speech user interfaces. She started her career at Bell Laboratories, working on the first application of speaker independent digit recognition. She has enjoyed designing applications that let callers speak naturally to recognizers – for customer service, for directory assistance, for driving directions, to find out when a package will be delivered -- so the caller’s experience is comfortable, efficient, and as pleasant as possible. In the process she’s collaborated with scores of engineers, worked with hundreds of telephone operators, listened to thousands of callers, and helped to automate millions of telephone transactions for clients such as UPS, AT&T and Verizon. Focusing on what the customer needs and maintaining a sense of humor keeps the work satisfying and entertaining. Martie earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Mount Holyoke College, and a Masters degree in Human Performance Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. She joined Microsoft Tellme in 2004.
