Dr. Thomas Schalk
Vice President, Voice Technology
ATX, a subsidiary of Cross Country Automotive Services

Dr. Thomas B. Schalk is Vice President, Voice Technology at ATX, a leading telematics service provider with customers that include Mercedes-Benz, Lexus and BMW. Dr. Schalk is responsible for guiding ATX's voice technology vision. He leads a group that focuses on developing speech-enabled telematics services. Prior to joining ATX, Dr. Schalk was the CTO of Philips Speech Processing, and the CTO of Voice Control Systems. He has over twenty years of experience in the speech recognition industry. He received his Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the George Washington University.

How well do automotive speech-enabled interfaces meet customer expectations? One could say that it depends on the application, but beyond voice dialing, the room for improvement seems endless. In fact, it has only been recently that the usability of in-vehicle voice technology has begun to meet customer expectations.
